Hundred was a key player in helping the Kuwait Environmental Remediation Programme establish world-leading procurement and communication protocols
The Brief
The Kuwait Environmental Remediation Programme or KERP program, funded by the UN and administered by the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research is a one of the largest environmental rehabilitation programs in the world, designed to remediate legacy oil contamination when approximately 700 Kuwaiti oil wells were destroyed and set ablaze during the conclusion of the Gulf War in Iraq in 1991.
Considered one of the worst environment catastrophes in recorded history, millions of liters of liquid crude oil were released into the waters of the Arabian Gulf. The surrounding desert habitat was devastated, over 26 million cubic meters of soil was heavily contaminated within the oil field areas, native ecosystems were destroyed and fauna and flora life in the affected areas were significantly impacted.
KERP has achieved high visibility and importance, both locally in the region and internationally as an example of success given international and multi-stakeholder objectives.
Hundred’s challenge was to work in collaboration with the United Nations, Kuwaiti government, the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR), Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) and other international bodies, to draft the development of world-leading procurement and communication protocols for the Kuwait Environmental Remediation Program
The Approach
The complexity of the stakeholder engagement was the most exciting part of the challenge – funding governance based in Brussels (UN), local prioritisation of effort owned by the Kuwaiti government and KOC, evaluation and award of projects based on technical capability owned by KISR and management of overall program co-ordination leading to ultimate success fell to KERP.
The team’s reputation and track record in the region for handling the most diverse range of strategic challenges and sensitive of communications meant Hundred were approached to write the protocols for the UN, within a 12-week window. As a key player in this international programme, it was vital that the team had a firm grasp of all regulatory, legal, social, and delivery milestone expectations
Our approach was to simplify consistently, and to ensure optimum clarity for all stakeholders.
Assessing each stakeholder community, their requirements, existing processes and protocols, stated ‘success criteria’ and existing communications protocols enabled us to set up workstreams to address the task ahead.
The Results
This activity green-lighted the first of many steps towards environmental remediation.
